Nouveau Voyage aux Isles de L'Amerique. Paris: Guillaume Cavelier, 1722. 6 volumes, 12° (150 x 95mm). Titles printed in red and black. 102 engraved maps, plans, views and plates (comprising: 92 plates [31 of these folding], 10 folding maps and plans). (Vol.II with tear to N6; vol.III with folding plate facing p.333 shaved with loss; R6 in vol.IV torn in half; Y6 & 7 in vol.VI loosely inserted.) Contemporary speckled calf gilt, spines in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering piece in the second compartment, the third compartment stained black and gilt tooled in volume number (extremities lightly rubbed and chipped).

EARLY EDITION OF LABAT'S IMPORTANT HISTORY OF THE WEST INDIES. According to Sabin, three different editions were published in the same year, with 'slight variations in the collation' (Sabin). Labat, a French Dominican missionary, naturalist and scientist, ministered to the Indians in the Caribbean from 1693 to 1706, visiting Martinique and Guadeloupe. The present work includes scientific observations, descriptions of flora and fauna, and suggestions for the trade of the islands' natural resources.
