Batley, 1725-1726. 6 volumes, 8° (195 x 120 mm). Title-pages printed in red and black. 17 plates and maps only (of 19, comprising: 3 folding maps, 3 frontispieces [including portraits of Columbus and Cortes] and 11 folding plates). (One plate and text leaves B2-7 in vol.IV detached and loosely inserted, frontispiece to vol.V shaved). Contemporary English speckled calf, covers with borders decorated in gilt and blind, spine in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, volume numbers in the third compartment, the others with repeat decoration in gilt (small chips to head of spines of vols. IV and V).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. According to the auction records, copies of this work are often found with less than the optimum number of plates and maps. The late 16th-century Spanish historian, Antonio de Herrera, is one of the most important authorities for early Spanish and Portuguese voyages to America. Sabin 31557; sold not subject to return. (6)
