AWNSHAM CHURCHILL (d.1728), JOHN CHURCHILL AND THOMAS OSBORNE
A. AND J. CHURCHILL. A Collection of Voyages & Travels, some now first printed from Original Manuscripts, others now first published in English. London, 1744-46. 6 volumes. [With:] THOMAS OSBORNE. A Collection of Voyages and Travels. London: Thomas Osborne, 1752. 2 volumes. Together 8 volumes, 2° (353 x 230mm). Approximately 300 engraved maps and plates, many double-page or folding. (Some scattered foxing and offsetting throughout.) Late-18th century calf using contemporary calf covers, covers with roll-tool border, the flat spines divided into six compartments by roll tools, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, red morocco label with onlaid small green roundel bearing the volume number in gilt in the fourth compartment, the others with elaborate neo-classical repeat design in gilt (some extremities scuffed, occasional small chips, split to upper joint of volume VII). Provenance: R.W. (late-18th century monogrammed bookplate).
THIRD AND BEST EDITION. 'This is a very valuable collection, both for its range of coverage and for the fact that it gives the original accounts ... This, the third edition, is considered to be the best because of its greater inclusiveness and its copious index. A descriptive introduction entitled "The catalogue and character of most books of voyages and travels" (p.i-xxix) is included in the first volume. This set also contains the rare two volumes known as the Harleian Voyages, compiled from Lord Oxford's library by Thomas Osborne, which are considered supplements to the Churchill's collection. Here Osborne's collection comprise volumes 7 and 8 of the series; these two were also issued separately in 1745 [see the 'section' titles following the series titles in the present examples].': Hill (2004) 295; Lust 247; NMM 33 (ref); Sabin 13017, 57765. (8)
