The Hague (vols.I-18) or Amsterdam (vols.XIX-XXV): Pierre de Hondt (vols.I-XVIII) or E. van Harrevelt & D.J. Changuion (vols.XIX-XXV), 1748-1763, 1772-1780. 25 volumes, 4° (259 x 200mm). Numerous engraved plates and maps (many folding). Contemporary near-uniform French mottled or cat's-paw calf, the spines uniformly gilt in seven compartents with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, green morocco lettering-piece in the third, the others with repeat styllised floral decoration in gilt (small chips to head of spines of three volumes). Provenance: unidentified early armorial bookplate in vols. I-XVIII.
A FINE MIXED EDITION SET OF A QUARTO ISSUE OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK. Hill's remarks on the 20-volume 4° Paris issue (dated 1746-1789) are equally applicable here: 'An important and scarce collection, which includes accounts of all the principal early Australian voyages... as well as an account of the discovery of Australia by the Dutch, early voyages to New Guinea and the Palau islands, and Roggeveen's voyage to the Terres Australes. African voyages include the early Portuguese and English voyages to West Africa and the Cape of Good Hope, with a general account of the Dutch at the Cape. Pacific voyages include those of Magellan, Schouten and Le Maire, Drake, Sarmiento, Cavendish, Spilbergen, Narborough, Rogers, Cowley, Frezier, and Anson. Particularly full accounts are given of the Dutch and French voyages to the East Indies, voyages to China, and the British East India Company's voyages to India and Ceylon'.
