RUSSIAN TOPOGRAPHY AND COSTUMES
A collection of topographic and ethnographic drawings and photographs from Russia c.1847-c1917 comprising:
LUISE VON SCHLÖTZER (née MEYER). An album of 30 pencil portraits, some wearing regional dress, 5 of these finished in watercolour, and six seascapes and pastoral views, a number dated c.1847-1852. Oblong 2° (370 x 262mm). Half calf (extremities rubbed). Luise von Meyer and Nestor von Schlözer (1808-1899) married and had 3 children Nestor: Karl and Leopold von Schlözer.
LEOPOLD VON SCHLÖZER (1859-1946). An album of photographs, drawings, paintings, postcards and clippings recording a journey from the Black Sea through the Caucasus to the Caspian Sea, 1896. Oblong 2° (412 x 289mm). With 10 large (generally c.250 x 200mm) albumen prints, 2 prints from the Kislovodsk studio of G. Rayev, and approx. 18 smaller prints (generally c.100 x 120mm). Half calf (spine partly detached with crude repairs, corners rubbed). The photographs include scenes and monuments from Sevastopol, Kertsch, and Baku, and portraits of Caucasians in regional dress including Kakheti, Kutaisi, and Dagestan.
A collection of approximately 180 photographs and postcards c.1900-1918 possibly compiled by Leopold von Schlözer, primarily war scenes from Grodno, and Pinsk in Belarus, Lithuania, the Kurland of Latvia, Serbia etc., with Russian army regional types: Caucasian infantry, Cossack camel regiment, scouts on skates, German troops on the railroad, some rural scenes etc., and including a photographic portrait of Leopold von Schlözer. Various sizes (generally approx. 140 x 90mm and above). Early 20th century cloth box.
A photographic portrait of Kurd von Schlözer [brother of Nestor von Schlözer], German ambassador to Washington, 1883. Albumen print, 405 x 255mm, framed and glazed (some uneven browning).
