Lot Essay

This bowl is entirely decorated with auspicious motifs: peaches for longevity; peony for prosperity; lingzhi for fulfillment; and wan for 'ten thousand'. Famille rose-decorated bowls of this type, with four medallions reserved on a sgraffito ground were quite popular during the Daoguang period, and the painting was delicate and refined. A pair of similar bowls was included in the exhibition, Qing Mark and Period Monochromes and Enameled Wares, S. Marchant and Son, London, July 1981, no. 59.
