Grange Hermitage--Vintage 1965
South Australia. Penfolds
Lot 574 slightly worn capsule. Slightly bin-soiled label. Level base of neck. Lot 575 slightly bin-soiled label. Level top-shoulder
Shiraz 95 Cabernet Sauvignon 5 the Cabernet from the vineyards in Magill, Kalimna, Southern Vales and the Barossa; 18 months in new American oaks. Only one note: deep, rich, mature; lean, brick dust and liquorice; sweet, raw texture, loads of tannin. M.B.
Considered a good rather than a great Grange although it did win a gold medal and the 1966 Jimmy Watson Trophy for the best 1 year old dry red at the Melbourne show, plus 2 more gold and 6 other medals between 1966 and 1973.
Tasting note: brick red. Complex gamey sweet fruited aromas. The palate is highly concentrated with developed gamey, soupy flavours, loose knit tannins and good length. Holding up well. A.C.
