Engraved portrait frontispiece and folding lithographic folding map by J. Netherclift and Son with Simpson's route hand-coloured in red. Diagram in the text. 24-page publisher's catalogue bound in at the end of vol. I (Occasional light inkmarking, one leaf of catalogue torn causing marginal loss.) Original cloth, boards blocked in blind with an Islamicate design, spine blocked in blind and lettered in gilt (extremities lightly rubbed and bumped, spines somewhat faded and leant). Provenance: I. Smith, March 1849 (pencilled inscriptions on titles) -- John Madden, Hilton Park, 1881 (1836-1902, bookplates and inscription on p. 101 margin in both vols.). FIRST EDITION. The account of 'Simpson's famous "overland" expedition around the globe' (Hill), from the library of the traveller and writer John Madden, author of The Wilderness and its Tenants: being Geographical and other Essays Illustrative of Life and Sport in Wild Countries (London: 1897). Woodcut illustrations in the text. Errata leaf. (Variable light spotting and browning, a few plates trimmed affecting captions.) 19th-century half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, lettered in one (a little rubbed, rebacked retaining original spine, endpapers renewed). FIRST EDITION. 'The official account of the first Swedish circumnavigation [...] prized for its fine color plates' (Hill), written by the expedition's astronomer. Hill 1578.
