Comprising two boards and a pentagonal flap, the exterior of each slot tooled and gilded with central medallion containing split-palmettes and peonies within a field of similar spiralling arabesques and with cloudbands, highlights picked out in blue, within a black morocco frame and further gilded border, the doublures with central cusped ovoid cartouche with decoupé arabesques and similar spandrels, on stamped gilded ground of cloudbands over arabesque small additional decoupé panels, within stamped and gilded border, spine worn

Lot Essay

Another Timurid binding with similar block-stamped gilded central panel, though without the blue highlights, and with a similar decoupé decoration on the doublures, is illustrated in Duncan Haldane, Islamic Bookbinding, London, 1983, pl.82, p.79.
