Lot Essay

The divine child, Zagreus-Dionysos, was dismembered by the Titans and brought back to life again by Pallas-Athene after undergoing a period of 'mummification'. As with Osiris, the Egyptian god with whom he is sometimes associated, Zagreus-Dionysos represents a god of death, transformation and rebirth. Plutarch writes: he is "...the god who is destroyed, who disappears, who relinquishes life and then is born again".
