The amphitheatre was designed with tiers of seating for 50,000 spectators around a central elliptical arena. Below the wooden arena floor, there was a complex set of rooms and passageways for wild beasts and equipment required for staging the spectacles. Titus famously inaugurated the Colosseum in the year 80 A.D. with one hundred days of celebrations. During this festival, it is estimated that thousands of men and animals were killed in 'The Games'.
