Grey interlaced L's enclosing date letters bb for 1779, painter's mark for Chapuis and gilder's mark for Chauvaux to both, incised 38 to the cup, 37 to the saucer
Continuously painted in colours with vignettes of two birds alternate with single birds within crossed branches and with a single cornflower, the whole reserved as a wide shaped band on the rich blue ground further gilt with wreaths and garlands of myrtle (2)

Lot Essay

Antoine-Joseph Chappuis le jeune is recorded at Sèvres as a painter specializing in birds and flowers 1761-1787. Michel-Barnabé Chauvaux is similarly recorded as a gilder 1752-1788.
