A rare late 19th-Century lacquered-brass compound monocular microscope,
signed on the foot ROSS 5228 LONDON, the barrel with draw-tube, rack and pinion and micrometer focusing, raised on the main limb with swinging Zentmayer smoked glass-topped circular stage, sliding substage condensor mount and plano-concave mirror, tilting between two columns from the A-shaped foot, with double nosepiece, understage-mounted disc with central condensor lens, four eyepieces, Ross ½ and ¼in. objectives in canisters, parabolic substage condensor, live box and a cloth-covered card box with thirteen amateur preparations, in a fitted mahogany carrying case -- 31.9cm. (12½in.) wide; and a good mahogany slide case with three trays containing 150 amateur preparations and a quantity of unused papers and slides -- 28.8cm. (11 3/8in.) wide (2)
