Lot Essay

Still life is a subject that dominates much of Hunter's oeuvre. The present work displays a combination of the major influences on his work, notably Manet, Cézanne and Matisse. His admiration of these artists brought to his paintings a bold and vibrant use of colour and a vigorous technique.
