Lot Essay

Hunter's early still lifes are generally characterised by a dark background, strongly influenced by the work of the Dutch 17th Century artists, and that of Chardin and Manet. His later works, including the present work, with its expressive use of colour, shows the inspiration of Cézanne, Matisse and the Fauves.
