Lot Essay

This painting is dateable to circa 1929 and derives from the artist's three year stay in the Cote d'Azur. The contrast between depicting the weight in the solitary apple (a concept assimilated from Cézanne's theories on art) and the reduction of the flowers to a flattened perspective are particularly characteristic of Hunter's late works.
