Lot Essay

After studying at the Edinburgh College of Art and winning a travelling scholarship to Paris, Johnstone lived a peripatetic life, living in California, Scotland and London. In London he was influenced by the avant-garde and his early works are abstracts based on biomorphic forms, strongly based on French and Spanish surrealism.
