A RARE POL-AXE FOR THE FOOT TOURNAMENT, ITALIAN OR GERMAN
circa 1500-1520
The head formed with axe-blade and rear fluke of one piece, the former with convex cutting-edge and the latter strongly beak-shaped and of stiff diamond section, the common socket encased over the top and sides by a pair of short straps pierced with gothic trefoils and slipped circles, all retained by a transverse bolt with later pyramidal nuts, and fitted with central spear-like spike: on later staff with two pairs of straps and sharply pointed shoe.

Lot Essay

Staff weapons of this type were popular throughout Europe for use for the foot combat in the barriers but the evidence of Dutch and Flemish painting suggests their additional use in war.
