A RARE GERMAN ETCHED STATE HALBERD OF THE GUARD OF THE EMPEROR FERDINAND II (REIGNED 1619-1637)

The head with central spike formed with a full-length medial ridge, flat axe-blade with crescentic leading-edge, flat rear fluke with cusped rear edges, open socket studded with a pair of large domed brass nails front and rear and extending to form a pair of long straps, decorated over the greater surface with etched panels of scrolling foliage and large expanded flowerheads, involving the abbreviated inscriptions 'FE' and 'ZO' (Ferdinand Emperator (sic) zu Ostereich) divided between the fluke and axe-blade on both sides, flanking the full Imperial arms on one face and the fire-steels and ragged staves of Burgundy on the other, and with the date 1620 at the base of the spike: on its original octagonal staff fitted with an additional pair of iron side-straps (significant wear and pitting, the greater on one side, the lower 22¾in of the staff replaced.)
