A FINE GERMAN MITTEN GAUNTLET FOR THE LEFT HAND
circa 1540
With hinged cuff closed by a stud and embossed for the ulna, articulated metacarpus of five lames, the edges cusped in the middle, mitten also of five lames, the inner four cut with a matching design and boxed in continuation of the larger metacarpal lame, fitted with embossed prominent knuckle-plate decorated with opposing roped panels divided centrally (small rust holes), the lower mitten-plate and the cuff each with turned roped edge en suite with the knuckle, with a recessed chevron band forming the subsidiary border, and retaining the original hinged thumb-plate (the successive articulations missing)
