Chinese works of art were a particular enthusiasm and the remarkable collection of jades was acquired with passion and connoisseurship. Chinoiserie emerges as a leifmotif through the collection linking the Oriental works of art with the Regency painted and gilded furniture including pieces from Lord and Lady Rothermere's collection at Daylesford and Warwick House, the dazzling array of lacquer and lacquered objects, and even extending to the luxurious textiles used for the curtains and upholstery. Works of art from a galaxy of distinguished sources were skilfully woven together to create a series of immensely glamorous and comfortable rooms, ideal for entertaining. Decorated by the brilliant Stéphane Boudin of Maison Jansen for the previous owners, the apartment's splendid progression of Drawing Room, Library and Dining Room, all fitted with Louis XVI boiseries and architectural details, magically combined French elegance and British comfort. These French-inspired rooms were very different to the restrained mid-Georgian refinement of Lord Clark's former Hampstead house, where much of the collection was previously housed. The move to Eaton Square meant exciting new settings for much loved treasures such as the extraordinary pair of almost life-size lead garden figures attributed to van Nost, originally from Oatlands Park in Surrey and acquired by Lord Clark for his Hampstead garden, whose scale was the perfect complement to the neo-classical grandeur of the Entrance Hall. Even the delightful green and white painted gothick room conjured up by John Fowler of Colefax and Fowler made the move from Hampstead to Belgravia to make a charming upstairs sitting room. Enjoyment has always been a key element - enjoyment of the works of art and the setting they enhanced, combined with pleasure they gave to all those lucky enough to enjoy them.
