The tall stand for vase or candelabrum, intended for the corners of a room and derived from the Roman tripod altar with bacchic ram monopodia, relates to a pattern popularised by the Rome-trained architect Robert Adam and published in R. and J. Adams' Works in Architecture, 1773 (pl. 8). Related stands were supplied in 1786 for Langley Park, Norfolk (advertised by Hotspur in Country Life, 13 October 1988). An almost identical pair was sold Sotheby's, London, 2 June 2000, lot 82.
