Lot Essay

The frame pattern reflects the picturesque Roman fashion introduced in the 1770s for the reuse of early eighteenth century mirror plates. The acanthus-wrapped pilasters crowned by a palm-supported sacred urn relates to the designs of the Berkeley Square firm of John Linnell (H. Hayward, 'The Drawings of John Linnell in the Victoria & Albert Museum', Furniture History, 1969, pp.1-116).
