Lot Essay

These festive lights relate to a design, attributed to the sculpteur/foundeur Jean Louis Prieur (d.1792), which features Venus doves with pearls (rather than garlands) attending a bacchante mask. The mask is tied to a bacchic thyrsus pillar together with bacchic goats that emerge from acanthus scrolled branches to guard vine-filled cornucopiae (H. Ottomeyer, P. Präschel, et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, p.2241, fig. 4.5.4).
