Lot Essay

Leon y Escosura was born in 1834 in Oviedo, where he began his studies in the School of Arts before moving to Madrid. In Madrid the young Leon y Escosura spent his time copying Spanish masters Murillo and Velasquez, familiarising himself with the genre of history painting. He moved to Paris in 1859, where he was influenced by the teachings of Delaroche and Gerome. His work was exhibited in many of Europe's capital cities, securing the artist numerous honours and medals.
