Lot Essay

Accompanied by Rolex Guarantee marked Andersen AFB Bx 8.18.61, instruction manual for the Oyster Patent crown and Rolex green leather presentation box.

As stated on the Guarantee, the present watch was purchased in 1961 at the Bx or Base Exchange Store of Andersen Air Force Base. Andersen is located in northern Guam in the Southwest Pacific and has been the focal point of United States Air Force strength in the Pacific Far East for more than 50 years. Its mission is to "provide peacetime and wartime support for aerospace forces in the Asian-Pacific theater". The base is home to the Headquarters of the 13th Air Force, the 36th Air Base Wing, and fifteen associate units.

Reference 6238 is the immediate predecessor of reference 6239, the first Cosmograph Daytona released by Rolex. It was made in stainless steel, 18K gold as well as a small series in 14K gold destined for the North American market (see the following lot).
