Lot Essay

George 'Sidney' Shepherd was a topographical, architectural and landscape painter. He probably worked at Dr Monro's and was awarded a silver palette in 1803 and 1804. He was one of the founding members of the New Water-colour Society in 1831. Although he made a sketching tour around England, Shepherd is best known for his London scenes, such as this present watercolour. Old London Bridge was demolished in 1832 after the opening of the new bridge by King William IV in August 1831.
