Lot Essay

The lead reliefs of Jasper Johns occupy a singular position in his work - poised as they are between printmaking and sculpture. They evolved out of his exploration of an embossing technique used in two prints Embossed Alphabet (ULAE 70) and No (ULAE 71) from 1969-70.
Lead presents an extremely malleable and fragile surface into which Johns impresses images and symbols used earlier such as The Critic Smiles (ULAE 73) and Flag (ULAE 74) as well as 0 Through 9 (ULAE 3). In this lead form, the disintegration of the numbers and of time is heavily stressed.
