Decoy is technically extremely complex, using as it does eighteen aluminium lithographic plates, one lithographic stone and one die cut element. The layers of imagery reuse the photographic elements from Passage I and II (ULAE 29 and 30) and the cancelled photo engraved plates used in First Etchings, 2nd State (ULAE 58). At the time of production of Decoy, ULAE founder, Tatyana Grosman, acquired a large offset proofing press. This process offered the possibility of making an image on a press without drawing it in reverse. Since, in printing, the image is transferred from the plate onto a rubber roller which then prints on the paper, doubly reversing the image. The use of the roller means that a thinner veil of ink is left, thus allowing more layering than would be possible from traditional lithography.
