Lot Essay
After Duke Carl Eugen Würtemburg's visit to Venice (1767-68), a fair was held in the Ludwigsburg marketplace as a divertissement for his court, and it is with this annual fair that the miniature Carnaval de Venise or Jahrmarkt series has been traditionally associated. The models are after designs by G.F.P. Riedel, and there appears to be no precise count of the component parts. The largest known assembled group, formerly in the possession of the Großherzöge von Baden, was sold by Sotheby's on 6th October 1995, lot 823. This included 112 different models, but other figures are known.
