Title within woodcut architectural border, 4 folding woodcut plates, numerous woodcut illustrations in the text, some double-page (light waterstaining in lower margins). Contemporary limp vellum, remains of ties. First Latin edition of this military classic, first published in Italian at Brescia in 1571, by a military architect considered, during his lifetime, to be one of the greatest military strategists in Europe. He was the author of at least eight works on military matters and fortification all of which were extremely popular. Cockle 542 (note); not in BMC or Adams.

FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of Grotius' Latin poetry, notable for the poem 'De Susanna' and for several poems on the wind-carriage. It was reprinted at least seven times in the 17th-century. Ter Meulen & Diermanse 1.
