BEN-GURION, David (1886-1963), First Prime Minister of Israel. Autograph letter signed ("D. Ben Gurion") to Prime Minister Mosche Sharett, Tel Hashomer, 30 July 1954. 1 page, 8vo, lined paper, two small file holes at top, in Hebrew.
"ATTACKING THE UNITED STATES...IS A STAB IN THE BACK TO OUR NATION..."
Sharette and some in his ministry had become alarmed at the improving relations between the U.S. and Egypt. To disrupt this trend, Israeli intelligence cells in Egypt were instructed to set fires at the U.S. libraries in Cairo and Alexandria, to give the impression of strong anti-American factions within Egypt. The incendiary acts were carried out on 14 July 1954, but not long afterwards, the plan was exposed, and the conspirators arrested in Egypt. An international furor erupted. Here, Ben-Gurion expresses his amazement and strong disapproval of these clandestine efforts: "We have no hope of winning the political battle without talent, wisdom and the will to find a path to all the enlightened and great nations who direct the international politics. Attacking the United States, as in this latest episode, is a stab in the back to our nation that struggles for its existence and its future. Such an attack is equivalent to an attack on the military abilities of the Israeli Defense Forces, since the military and political struggles are intertwined in each other."
The trials of the conspirators and the execution of two, was kept largely secret in Israel for many years. Ben-Gurion would again take the position of Prime Minister, serving from 1955 to 1963.
