The present model of the pacing horse is based upon one of Giambologna's most popular bronzes, reproduced by his own workshop and by numerous other foundries thoughout the centuries. That model is ultimately derived from the spectacular monument to Cosimo I de' Medici on horseback in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence (see C. Avery, Giambologna - The Complete Sculpture, Oxford, 1987, pp. 157-161, figs. 162 and 164). The rearing horse is probably an original invention of the artist responsible for the present pair, invented as a pendant to the pacing horse.
