Lot Essay

The flowered pier-glass, with mirrored borders of rustic pilasters wreathed by Roman foliage and dripping water, is designed in the French 'picturesque' style popularised by Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754; and relates in particular to ornament in his patterns for 'Pier Glass Frames', (pls. 141 and 142). Their mirrored plates and 'head-glasses' were generally reused from early 18th century pier-glasses.
