'Following a visit to Venice in 1954 where he had watched a group of boys and young men bathing from a jetty on the Giudecca, Ayrton prepared a series of studies of the human figure in gentle movement and rest ... Leading from these studies ... is the large Bather with Child of 1956-57' (see P. Cannon-Brookes, loc. cit).
