The Kings Maiesties Declaration to His Subjects, concerning Lawfull Sports to bee used. London: Robert Barker and the assignes of John Bill, 1633 [but 1634]. Small 4° (17.4 x 13.5cm), woodcut title device, woodcut royal arms on title verso, floreated opening initials (title and preliminaries frayed at right hand corners, lacks first leaf, blank except for signature mark "A", and final blank), later 19th-century calf, front cover lettered in gilt (spine worn, one corner bumped). Provenance: Southam de la Bere (partially erased bookplate) -- Earl of Ellenborough (heirloom, book no. 978, according to stamp on front blank).
A reprint of the edition of 1633, STC 9254.7, including the date of issue: a reissue of James I's proclamation of 24 May 1618, with an endorsement by Charles I at end. This celebrated royal declaration allowed "dauncing ... archery for men, leaping, vaulting, or any other such harmlesse recreation" after divine service on Sundays, also "May games, Whitson ales, and Morris dances". But it continued to prohibit "beare and bullbaitings, interludes, and at all times in the meaner sort of people ... bowling". STC 9258.
