Engraved title vignette, engraved frontispiece by and after C. Mellon (light browning, paper fault in B2-3, publication date pencilled at foot of frontispiece), contemporary limp vellum with paper labels. Provenance: Weingarten monastery, 1659 (inscription on title; 17th-century reader's notes on inner cover) -- Königliche Bibliothek (stamp on title) -- purchased from Leo Baer, Paris, 4 December 1936 for fr. 155 (£1 10s).

FIRST EDITION. The "table des principales matières" at the end lists 34 subjects to be covered in the Daupin's education, no. 29 being: "Des jeus de la paulme, du mail, de la course, de la lutte". The author, who was tutor to Louis XIV, warns that animosity or aggression may become too great in "ces exercises de chaleur et d'impetuosité ... Celuy de la paume semble plus reglé, l'agitation neanmoins en est fort grand, et il n'est past propre pur toute sorte de complexions" (see pp. 222-225). RARE.
