DIANA DORS Diana Dors (1931-1984), born Diana Mary Fluck, was Britain's answer to Marilyn Monroe. Taken to the cinema and given dance lessons from a young age, Dors became obsessed with Hollywood in her early teens. Looking older than her years, she entered a beauty contest at 14 (giving her age as 17) and won a prize resulting in her photograph being published in the local paper. This led to weekly work as a photographer's model which, in turn, led to her involvement in local theatrical productions. When she was still only 14, she gained a place at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts; she was the youngest full-time student they had ever accepted. To help fund her way through college, she posed nude for art shots, still lying about her age. The same glamorous and seductive look that made her popular with photographers, secured her her first film role in The Shop At Sly Corner (1947), in which she was given a small part as a coquette. It was at this point that she changed her name to Diana Dors. In the mid-1940s, she started working with J. Arthur Rank and starred in a number of his films. By the 1950s, she was a household name, but despite her varied and competent acting skills, she was almost always typecast as a sexy siren - as in Blonde Sinner, Passport To Shame and The Unholy Wife. She died an untimely death at the age of 53.
