Lot Essay

Barker cast the present work directly from Francis Bacon's face in Bacon's studio. Barker says 'in retrospect I can see it was very difficult for Francis. Francis, of course, had asthma, and being under that for 30 minutes can not have been very comfortable (Clive Barker, private correspondence, 12 October 2005).
