1975 ROLLS-ROYCE CORNICHE FIXED HEAD COUPÉÉ
COACHWORK BY MULLINER PARK WARD
Registration No. JCV 407N
Chassis No. CRH 18786
Engine No. 18786
Olive Green over Willow gold with fawn leather interior
Engine: V8, overhead valve, 6,750cc, 225bhp at 4500 rpm; Gearbox: three speed automatic; Suspension: front, independent, lower with wishbones, coil springs, with and anti-dive, rear by trailing arm and coil spring, automatic levelling; Brakes: power-assisted disc. Right hand drive.
There can be few models of car as aptly titled as the Corniche Rolls-Royce, which from its introduction in 1971 as a new designation for their unitary construction coupé and convertibles immediately took owners spiritually to the coastal Southern France road of its name. An elegant four person grand tourer, it can be summed up in no better than way than by Classic Cars magazine in a 'Driving our ads' piece in their 25th Anniversary edition (October 1998) about this very car, when the journal concludes that the car is 'a lovely relaxing drive' - something to which many owners of the model will no doubt attest to.
The Corniche coupé on offer has a relatively uncomplicated history. It was registered new in March 1975 to H. Friedman of F & W Manufacturing Ltd, having been sold through Lex Mead. This owner kept the car for four years and subsequent changes of ownership are recorded through copies of registration documents. A handful of further owners over the last three decades have provided what can now be described by its current custodian as an 'honest example' of the marque.
Supporting its history are the remains of service vouchers detailing mileage up to 1980, and some correspondence. There are various bills on file throughout the car's life. The most notable recent expenditure includes more than £4,000 on body repairs to the lower wings all round, a new exhaust system and an overhaul of the rear brakes and suspension.
Of particular note, and recorded with a series of photographs, was the effort made by the car's previous owner to re-unite the Corniche's designer John Blatchley with this car, the exercise being covered in the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club Bulletin in December 1997.
