DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge ('Lewis Carroll'). An Elementary Treatise on Determinants with their application to Simultaneous Equations and Algebraical Geometry. London: T. Combe, E.B. Gardner, E.P. Hall and H. Latham for Macmillan, 1867.
4° (240 x 179mm). (Occasional very light marginal soiling.) Original burgundy cloth, sides blind-ruled, spine gilt-lettered, sprinkled edges, black coated endpapers (expert repairs to the spine and corners); modern black cloth box. Provenance: Charles Morgan (1803-1888, inscription).
FIRST EDITION, UNRECORDED VARIANT BINDING. The Welsh Antiquary Charles Morgan took his B.A. at Christ Church in 1825 where it is likely he met Dodgson, though at a later date. This copy is bound in burgundy cloth and black coated endpapers instead of the usual dark brown cloth and white endpapers. Collingwood described the work as 'largely original, and its arrangement and style are, perhaps, as attractive as the nature of the subject will allow' (WMGC). Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 57.
