12° (143 x 98mm). Original pictorial blue cloth, blocked red, green and white on the upper cover (extremities lightly rubbed); modern box. Provenance: Marion Louisa 'May' Miller (1868-1946, inscription from Dodgson).

Third edition. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY DODGSON: 'Marion Miller from C.L. Dodgson. Oct. 25, 1893'. Dodgson maintained a lifelong correspondence with Marion Miller, whom he first befriended (with her sister Edith) at Eastbourne in 1881, and subsequently met there again for at least five consecutive summers. Dodgson describes her as 'a very charming companion' (Letters p.443n), and records an eventful outing with May to Brighton in August 1893 and dining with her on 7 October (cf. Letters pp. 973-4 and 982). This edition of Yonge's book was published in the year of the first; all editions are uncommon.
