DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge ('Lewis Carroll'). Symbolic Logic. Part I Elementary [all published]. London: Richard Clay and Sons, Limited for Macmillan, 1896.

8° (169 x 116mm). Original smooth brown cloth over boards, cut flush, front cover lettered and ruled in black (cloth lifting slightly at corners); red morocco-backed slipcase and chemise. Provenance: George Edward Jelf (1834-1908, inscription from the author).

FIRST EDITION, PRE-PUBLICATION PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR two days before publication: 'G.E. Jelf with the Author's sincere regards, Feb. 22, 1896'. Symbolic Logic is a serious attempt by Dodgson to popularize accuracy of thought and Formal Logic, largely through the use of diagrams. Dodgson 'attached special value to this book if, as he hoped, it would lead to clearer judgments in people who thought at all and regarded it as "work for God"' (WMGC p.195). The novelty of Dodgson's method, and the author's own popularity, secured the work considerable success. Jelf matriculated at Christ Church soon after Dodgson. He was a popular preacher and missionary who exercised considerable influence through his numerous homiletic publications, including The Secret Trials of the Christian Life and Work and Worship. This copy was sent to Dodgson before Macmillan printed the slip of corrections dated 24 February found in later copies. Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 270.
