Deeply carved through layers of cinnabar-red and olive-green lacquer, with a central large chrysanthemum bloom on the top of the cover, surrounded by three smaller flowers and serrated-edge leaves continuing down the sides, the shallow box carved with a narrow frieze of buds and leaves, the interior and base with dark brown lacquer and incised with an apocryphal maker's mark, Zhang Cheng zao
