The deep box and high domed cover well carved in deep relief through layers of dark brown and cinnabar-red lacquer with bands of ruyi scrolls, centering on a flower-head on the cover, all raised on a splayed foot encircled by classic scrolls, the interior and base covered with brown lacquer

Deep boxes of this type would most likely have been used to contain food. A similar octagonal box from the Tokyo University of Arts, was included in the exhibition, Carved Lacquer, Tokugawa Art Museum and Nezu Institute of Fine Arts, 1984, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 17.
