The Summer landscape scene is rendered with finely carved buffalo horn of varying caramel brown tones arranged against a painted ochre-ground, depicting a scholar walking on an embankment that leads to an arched wooden bridge connected to a homestead, detailed with tall trees and a pavilion by the waterfront where a further scholar is seated, leaning against the balustrade in appreciation of lotus flowers growing on the vast lake, the background with near and distant mountains, all within a hardwood frame

A similar landscape panel of the same buffalo horn appliqué design is illustrated by S. Jenyns, Chinese Art, vol. 3, nos. 148a and 148b.

The scene probably depicts the Guanlian Suo, 'Viewing Lotus Pavilion', a scenic location ideal for observing lotus flowers situated within Bishushan Zhuang, 'A Mountain Retreat Away from the Heat', the Imperial Summer Resort in Chengde, Hebei province.
