Many tribute jades inlaid with precious stones made by Mughal craftsmen were received by the Qing court. These were particularly appreciated by the Qianlong emperor who wrote poems in praise of their quality. It is, therefore, not surprising to find Mughal-style decoration on quality crystal with a rich combination of rubies, emeralds and diamonds.
The present covered bowl compares closely to two other gem-encrusted crystal vessels from this group, both sold in these Rooms, a covered bowl with fitted saucer sold 3 November 1998, lot 884, and a fluted cup and cover, sold 30 May 2005, lot 1415.
