Known as the 'Animal Service', the sauce-tureen with richly-gilt scroll handles, painted to one side with The lesser dormouse, to the other with The fox hound, the cover with The turnspit and The comforter within oval gilt-edged panels, flanked by gilt stylised foliage, titled in iron-red to the underside; the plate with The Domestic cat (the plate with glaze crazing, very minor wear to gilding)

The 'Animal Service' was manufactuered by John Rose and painted by independent artists. Designs were taken from Bewick's, A General History of Quadrupeds which documented both wild and domestic animals. Cf., Michael Messenger, Coalport, 1795-1926, (1998, Suffolk), p. 15, colour plate 4.
