8o. Errata leaf at end. (Pale areas of discoloration to title margins.) Modern brown morocco, edges gilt, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe; cloth folding case.

FIRST EDITION, THE RARE FIRST ISSUE, with the fly-title (leaf d) to "Laon and Cythna" with a quotation from Pindar, errata leaf and blank leaf at end, without the advertisement leaf or blank leaf following the title found in some copies. Paper watermarked "RD , 1816". PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY SHELLEY on the blank flyleaf: "From the Author." Copies of the first issue are exceedingly scarce, as the work was quickly suppressed for its religious, sexual and political content. Under protest, Shelley changed the offending passages, including the brother-sister incestuous relationship of Laon and Cythna, the latter his first strong, female character. It was reissued with the new title The Revolt of Islam.

On November 25, 1817, Shelley instructed Ollier to send him twelve copies of Laon and Cythna as soon as they could be put into boards. These twelve copies were probably the extent of the first issue, as Ollier, early in December, refused to publish the poem unless certain changes were made to the text. It was then that Shelley reworked the text, and Ollier issued the book with a cancel title-page and twenty-six cancel leaves.
