THE NATIVITY, miniature on a leaf from an ILLUMINATED BOOK OF HOURS ON VELLUM

[Rouen, 1470s]
168 x 109 mm (visible surface). Arch-topped miniature showing the Virgin, Joseph and Shepherds in adoration of the Christ Child, the miniature and a few lines of text within a floral border including two vignettes of shepherds dancing and chatting (slight smudging). This leaf carries the opening of Prime from the Office of the Virgin, and is offered together with another leaf containing Psalm 29 from the Office of the Dead from the same book of hours 97 x 110mm visible surface), the two leaves mounted and framed side by side. All text pages with 17 lines of gothic bookhand with illuminated initials of burnished gold and colours, and panel borders of acanthus and flower sprays in outer margins. Both the clear design and lively figure style show an obvious relationship with the work of the illuminator known as the Master of the Geneva Latini, or the Master of the Echevinage de Rouen, who dominated manuscript production in Rouen in the second half of the 15th century.
